The history of maps is a reflection of how man has dealt with the notion of territories and knowledge. Before Christopher Colombus, who found America believing he had found India, maps were drawn with almost no empty space, because man couldn’t even conceive of the idea of the unknown. It was only after it became accepted that Colombus had found a continent by accident that the resultant psychological and ideological breakthrough led to maps being drawing with large empty white areas; a clear admission that Europeans did not know part of the world.
